Cognitive Development in the Context of Human Flourishing
Excerpt: Cognitive development is more than the accumulation of knowledge; it is the deepening of how individuals make sense of reality. As cognition matures, people become better able to think abstractly, recognise complexity, reflect on their own assumptions, and integrate multiple perspectives. Within human flourishing, this growth matters because it supports wiser judgement, adaptive learning, ethical awareness, and the capacity to respond to uncertainty with flexibility rather than fear. Yet cognitive development reaches its fullest value only when integrated with emotional, relational, moral, creative, and embodied intelligences. Knowledge alone may increase capability, but integrated cognition can foster wisdom.
